Essential marjoram oil from Thymus mastichina originates from sunny Spain and is gently steam-distilled from the plant's fresh leaves and flowering tops. This characterful plant has a softly hairy stem, oval leaves, and small, beautiful whitish flowers in dense clusters – and the entire plant emits an intensely rich and pleasant scent.

Botanically, the plant is a wild-growing type of thyme, but it is internationally best known by the name Spanish wild marjoram. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family (mint family) in Spain and should not be confused with sweet or French marjoram. It is also not the same plant as oregano, although oregano is sometimes popularly referred to as wild marjoram.

The oil is a fantastic asset in modern aromatherapy and works excellently when blended with, for example, lavender oil and bergamot oil to create a deeply relaxing, warm, and secure environment in the home. When used in a diffuser, aroma lamp, or as a luxurious ingredient in a massage oil (always well diluted in a mild carrier oil, such as almond oil), it contributes to a wonderfully soothing feeling for the senses. In the fragrance tradition, its warm aroma is associated with emotional comfort and inner strength during periods of loneliness or low mood.

The ancient Greeks and Romans held this plant in very high regard and traditionally crowned bridal couples with beautiful wreaths of marjoram to symbolize eternal love, honor, and happiness. Historically, it is also said that warm marjoram tea sweetened with honey was frequently used by professional singers of the time to care for and preserve their voices during long performances.
